Spotlighting Dr. Janice Fortman on mother-daughter relationships and resolutions during Women’s History Month

On March 16, 2017, Cider Enterprises Book Club spotlights international speaker Dr. Janice Hooker Fortman and her book on difficult mother-daughter relationships and resolutions. Women in many areas of the world use this month to celebrate the extraordinary achievements of women and ensure that others are mindful of our importance. The United States Congress passed Pub. L. 100-9 in 1987, declaring March as National Women’s History Month in perpetuity. How do you acknowledge Women’s History month? What pro-active women honoring endeavors do you engage in or know about? We invite you to join us and share our relevant and timely conference call event with your network.
Dr. Fortman’s book, “The Secrets to How Not to Throw Mama from the Train,” focuses on the often challenging relationship between adult daughters and their aging mothers, and the communication patterns that cause difficulties. Her book and related workshops offer insights, advice, and solutions that have helped many women resolve conflicts in this complicated and dynamic relationship.
On a more personal note, I discovered Janice after becoming thoroughly engaged in her web of communication. Our first meeting was at the 2016 Soulful Chicago Book Fair last summer and her conversation was both informative and humorous. She presented a topic I am personally experiencing. Yet, I had not considered the number of other women I know going through the same thing. The statements she made about the emotions we may experience in care-giving motivated me to get her book and learn. Dr. Fortman addresses one of women’s most basic relationships, from the cradle to the grave, offering insight and tools that give honor and value to the relationship between mothers and daughters. She considers communication to be the foundation for relationships, both personal and professional.
The efforts we employ to create and experience better relationships have a strong root in this mother-daughter dynamic. “The Secrets to How Not to Throw Mama from the Train” is a powerful place to begin the journey to ‘over-come’ the short-falls we may experience in providing ‘loving care’ to our mothers and other women. I encourage you to purchase a copy for yourself or someone you know who may be dealing with this common family dynamic.
